Parents of Addicted Loved Ones (PAL) is a national non-profit organization that offers hope through education and support to parents of adults dealing with substance use disorder. Families of the addicted often become collateral damage in the war on drugs, sacrificing their health, finances, and relationships in an effort to save their loved ones.
PAL provides evidence-based education to help parents encourage their loved one's recovery without enabling their addiction. It also offers peer-to-peer support, allowing parents to face the challenges of addiction in a nonjudgmental and understanding group. Weekly meetings are held at no charge across the country.
PAL hosts problem-solving group meetings for parents, family members, and friends affected by the collateral effects of addiction. Using an evidence-based model of parents helping parents, the program provides addiction education and tools for developing healthy family communication in a caring environment.
The PAL curriculum covers the disease and cycle of addiction, emphasizing how improving family relationships can positively impact both family members and the addicted individual. Participants can attend as many or as few group sessions as they wish, at no charge, with no requirement to enroll in services.
Make Parents of addicted loved ones, meeting available to all in our community.

The flagship program of the organization offers weekly meetings at no cost to participants, led by trained peer volunteer facilitators who have experienced the addiction of a loved one. Using a parents-helping-parents model, the educational component includes nine core lessons, supplemental lessons, and occasional guest speakers. These meetings cover various topics related to addiction and recovery, aiming to build the behavioral and communication tools families need to handle the stressful situations they face when their adult child suffers from addiction. Individuals can attend for as long as they need support and wish to offer support to other families.

Parents interested in starting PAL groups in their community can attend an in-depth online training program to learn the necessary skills for facilitating meetings. These parents do not need to be experts or have their lives perfectly in order—just a willingness to serve.

In addition to free weekly meetings, PAL offers free training opportunities for the public, from in-person seminars with experts in the treatment and recovery field to Facebook Live events that can be viewed real-time when participants can ask questions of the presenters. The Facebook events can also be watched anytime afterwards at the viewer’s convenience. Topics covered include mental health, dealing with the holidays, suicide, finding joy, letting go of guilt, alternative medicines, how to help your family heal and more. Most presentations can be found on the PAL Facebook page or on our YouTube channel.
Jim and Tesa have experienced and continue to experience challenges with children with addiction and substance use disorder issues and are now committed to giving back to our community and helping others who are experiencing similar challenges.
